It’s an exciting day for Nintendo 3DS fans, or at least fans of 3DS games. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies, classically a game released for Nintendo handheld consoles, is now available to download to your iOS device of choice. But it’s not the fact that it’s available for mobile that’s exciting. In this case, it’s that it’s available (over a year after the original was released for Nintendo 3DS), but the fact that it’s $15 cheaper than the 3DS version!
The first chapter of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies is available for free on the App Store, thus lowering the barrier to entry for potential new fans, but all episodes beyond the first (of which there are three plus a special episode) are $5 each. This model has worked well for other games that have attempted it, most notably Telltale’s The Walking Dead. I should say, it’s worked well for the consumers of other games. Having a free game on the app store in this case constitutes a demo with an option to purchase the full game — a much better alternative to the nickel-and-diming microtransaction schemes that are so common today.
