At Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference this morning, it was announced that developers of mobile games and apps will be able to sell bundles of apps at a discount. This has particularly interesting implications for mobile gaming, as it not only allows developers with extensive libraries to offer an up-sell to customers, but it also gives particularly devoted fans a new, inexpensive way to purchase games from their favorite developers. Many of us are already purchasing every release from top-developers anyway, this this is a welcome update. This may also give premium game developers a way to better compete against the onslaught of free games that tends to crowd-out the market.
In addition to this, we’d love to see an option to buy season passes; i.e., future offerings from developers. For example, it’d be nice to purchase all Angry Birds games, plus the next five Angry Birds games to come out in the future. We can see, however, how Apple may not want to deal with the customer service issues that could arise from this, but heck, we can dream right?
iOS 8 will be available as a free update this fall.
