The famed castle-building PC series, Stronghold, is making its way to the App Store next month, with a mobile-optimized version of Stronghold 3. Stronghold is a real time strategy series that typically has the player building a castle, managing its economy and personnel, and defending it from invaders. While the series as a whole on PC has seen mostly positive reception, the latest incarnation, Stronghold 3, has seen mixed reviews at best.
Regardless, we remain hopeful about the future of the Stronghold series, and think the iPad could serve as an appropriate platform for the type of gameplay Stronghold has historically provided. In this case, the first indication of the game’s potential quality will be in its pricing. Will the developers take the fermium route and end up nickel-and-diming their players? Or will they sell Stronghold 3 at a premium, but deliver an ultimately more satisfying experience? The screenshots and trailer don’t indicate the use of any kind of IAP currency, but we’ll have to wait until June to find for sure.
