No, this isn’t the Super Monkey Ball you’re used to. For the uninitiated, Super Monkey Ball is a franchise by SEGA that has historically had you controlling a monkey trapped in a hamster-ball type contraption, rolling around in a 3D environment. This rendition of Super Monkey Ball, however, looks to be heavily inspired by Peggle, or at least the genre it created. Is it any good? Time will tell. If it’s as clean and Polished as Peggle it we think it will be. However, we’re remaining cautiously optimistic, as Super Monkey Ball Bounce will unfortunately be free to play, meaning there’s a high likelihood of aggressive IAPs. We can’t deny, however, that based on the trailer, and sneak-peek gameplay video hitting YouTube (see above), the game at least looks like a whole-hearted attempt at something special.
From the graphics, to the sound effects, to the power-ups, Peggle managed to deliver a wholly fulfilling experience. Thanks to the seemingly random nature of the ball bouncing, it’s a relatively non-stressful game. If SEGA can capture the same magic that PopCap was able to with Peggle, and assuming they can gain traction on the ever-competitive AppStore we’re sure Super Monkey Ball Bounce will be a force to be reckoned with.
According to SEGA’s Facebook page, Super Monkey Ball is coming to iOS either “soon” or “this year,” depending which you believe. What do you think? Does SEGA have what it takes to take on the genre-defining Peggle?
