An unnamed source inside Samsung has told Engadget that a virtual reality headset is currently being developed that is set to release this fall. Considering Sony’s recent announcement of Morpheus, their new virtual reality headset, and Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus Rift, it’s not surpassing to hear that other big companies want to get in on the action.
The more surprising part of the story is that they intend the headset to be used for mobile gaming exclusively with the Samsung Galaxy products. While this could potentially be a major selling feature for the Galaxy line, it seems odd to us. Firstly, a large headset seems to go counter to mobile gaming in general, considering it’s not exactly a pocket-sized device. Second, Android already has a fragmentation problem, due to the huge variety of hardware available. Surely this would worsen this problem.
Samsung hopes to beat Oculus and Sony to market, as well as undercut their price. To read all the details, be sure to check out Engadget’s full article.
